Teaching Philosophy
I believe that any student has the ability to achieve their goals, whether it be music-making for personal pleasure or heading into a professional career in music. I personalize my lesson plans to each student to incorporate activities and projects that will match their learning style. Through these personalized plans, new skills and concepts will be introduced and reinforced both on and off their instrument through games and written music. Children and adults of all ages can enjoy lessons and music making!
In my studio, students will encounter a variety of musical genres: from classical to jazz, ragtime to musical theater. These pieces will be taught in a historical and theoretical context as well as artistically. Storytelling is a big part of how I approach expression with students. Through guided listening and practicing their own pieces, they will be able to feel the overall mood of a piece, identify different musical “characters” within a piece, and portray the feeling and emotion they want to during their own playing. Students will also receive ear training and learn pieces both by written music and by ear. Musical theory will also be explored, including the opportunity to compose.
Music is a very personal expression of self, and one of my goals is to provide a safe environment for students to explore their emotions, new techniques, and a place where they feel comfortable making mistakes. I strive to give my students a strong sense of confidence in their music skills and provide multiple performance opportunities throughout the year. Sharing their music with others is a fantastic way to build confidence, set goals, and aim for wonderful musical experiences!
As a music teacher, I enjoy being a student myself! I loved music lessons as a child and continue to hone my own skills today. I completed my Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance in 2016 and am currently pursuing certification as an Elementary Piano Specialist as well as working towards my ARCT in piano. I constantly research new music, learning activities, new approaches in pedagogy, and exciting ways to keep lessons fresh for students. I am a true believer in lifelong learning and aspire to have my passion flow into my students’ lessons. I believe that passing on a love of learning is perhaps the most important thing you can do as a teacher and I work hard every day to inspire my students to learn and set their own goals in their educational paths.
It is my job as a music educator to set expectations and standards very high right from the beginning of lessons. Learning how to set goals and endeavoring to reach them is the main way students progress and develop into the musicians they strive to be. I provide every skill and piece of information that I can in order for them to grow, be inspired, appreciate music on a variety of levels, and discover their own voice as an artist.
Ultimately, I strive for each student to possess the skills necessary to succeed on their own; to have the ability to reach into themselves and create art with fearless abandon; to instill a lifelong love of music within them and pass along the knowledge and ability to fulfill their musical dreams.
